In line with the mandate of the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, to improve digital awareness and empower Nigerian youths with requisite skills needed for job creations as players in the digital transformation agenda, the Agency has commenced a capacity development program for artisans and under-served youths in Digital Literacy and Repair of Global System for Mobile Communication, (GSM) phone.

The capacity building, which aimed at addressing the mirage of problems confronting the nation especially the shortage of skills among a large number of our unemployed and underemployed youths would hold in four different states of Gombe, Kogi, Niger, and Oyo.

The main purpose of the project is to train youth artisans who already have some skills but need to be empowered with digital skills and ICT tools in order to be competitive in the 21st-century digital economy.

A total number of 70 participants per state, drawn from each of the four states, would be trained for five days between January 10th-14th, 2022, to up their skills in modern-day technologies of repair of mobile phone, digital skills, and handling ICT tools. This will enable them to become competitive in this era of the digital economy.

Expectedly, the outcome of the capacity building would help to empower artisan youths in enhancing their businesses and earning a higher income; reduce youth unemployment by facilitating the establishment of more businesses; create new startups and more vibrant artisan communities while facilitating entrepreneurship growth and youth advancement across the country.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is the apex regulator for Information Technology in Nigeria under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy. The Agency is empowered by Section 6(c) of the NITDA Act, 2007 to develop guidelines for electronic governance and monitor the use of electronic data interchange and other forms of electronic communication transactions in Nigeria. The Agency issued the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) as Nigeria’s first comprehensive framework for the protection of personal data. The NDPR provides the principles and framework for the protection and processing of the personal data of Nigerians and residents.

…NITDA KEEPING PACE WITH PLWD THROUGH DIGITAL INCLUSION

In a bid to ensure the implementation of equal opportunities and promote digital inclusion, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has pledged its continual promotion of digital literacy and skills to Persons With Disabilities (PWD).

The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, CCIE, made this assertion while receiving the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons With Disabilities, NCPWD, James Lalu, and his team on a courtesy visit to the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Inuwa ostensibly agreed with the description of the Executive Secretary, NCPWD that President Muhammed Buhari, GCFR, is the friendliest PLWD President since the amalgamation of the nation in 1914, haven passed into law the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

The Director-General assured his visitors of NITDA’s continual inclusion of PWD in all its initiatives with a special training session specifically targeted at equipping them with necessary tools, knowledge, and skills on digital transformation.

According to Inuwa, “building a digitally inclusive community requires participation and support from all stakeholders, and partnership with the NCPWD would accelerate the campaign of promoting digital inclusion. We can work together to design special initiatives that would expand the impact of the two organisations.”

“We can organise a challenge where people would come up with ideas to create a disability-friendly application,” this Inuwa added, would be an enabler that would assist in optimizing the best technology to meet identified objectives.”

“Your commission can work towards building a special IT hub while NITDA provides the technical know-how and necessary tools,” suggested Inuwa.

He informed the team that the Agency has opened a link where PWDs in South-South Zone can register for a five-day empowerment program on digital skills and entrepreneurship at Port Harcourt from the 24th till 28th January 2022.

While responding, the Executive Secretary, James Lalu, haven commended NITDA for its efforts in promoting digital inclusion among PWDs saying, the PWD commission prays for extension of training periods, curriculum, the need for experts and training facilitators at the eLearning Training Centre to work in collaboration with the aim of developing a robust website.

The meeting finally agreed on setting up a team comprising staff of both organisations to work out modalities and possible areas of collaboration.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) under the supervision of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy through its subsidiary, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) is hosting 3 editions of the NITDA HACKATHON in January 2022.

NITDA Hackathon is a national event in collaboration with academic institutions to drive digital innovation and entrepreneurship by challenging Nigeria’s teeming youths to ideate and develop solutions from inception through to the market.

The hackathon is set to develop and grow a global network of IT experts, comprising Nigerian youths within the country and in the diaspora. It is targeted at inculcating entrepreneurship spirit in academia, creating a platform where industry and public institutions will leverage the academic research ecosystem to solve national challenges using technology.

This year, the focus is on Agriculture, Security, and Logistics. The first edition will hold between 18th – 20th January 2022 at the Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH), Yola, Adamawa. And the second edition will hold between 25th – 27th January 2022 at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, while the third edition will hold between 31st January – 2nd February 2022 at the University of Calabar, Cross Rivers State.

The challenge is open to ALL- students, entrepreneurs, and innovators.

The successful startups’ groups in each category will be awarded cash prizes and will have the opportunity to develop their idea further for commercialization with NITDA’s support.
