Oluwanifesimi Oyawa, a 16 years old senior secondary school three student in Lagos, has revealed how his experience as a one-day Federal lawmaker at the National Assembly in Abuja changed his views about the incredible power of technology.

Master Oyawa who got the opportunity as a reward for emerging first in the Hon. Ademorin Kuye ICT competition, an initiative of the federal lawmaker representing Shomolu Federal constituency, held last September, noted that though he believed in technology the entire experience made him realise that technology can unlock endless opportunities.

He urged students and youth to embrace computer and technology studies more as it can launch them into global stardom and excellence, and begged parents to allow children to interact more with technology and computers.

He also noted that computer skills are one of the competencies that a lot of employers expect from people to enhance productivity and development, so, allowing students to prove and improve themselves through the spirit of competition must be sustained.

“The fact that I won that competition, stayed with me, as I had never really seen myself work so hard towards something, and I think it ingrained the love for studying computer in me. My experience as a one day Federal lawmaker at the National Assembly in Abuja made possible by a passion for computer and technology studies has been a life changer.

“Computer benefits society greatly and this programme opened my eyes to see that more. The competition was a genius idea on Mr Kuye’s part as it enlightened and empowered students on the benefits of learning various computer skills,” he noted.

Explaining further, he recalled: “A few months ago, I was given the rare privilege in the Nigerian National Assembly to spend one day at the Federal capital territory in Abuja as a Federal lawmaker in the House of Representatives for the Shomolu constituency. It was an eye-opening experience, and I got to experience the intricacies of the law making system. Let me tell you, the explanations from my civic teacher didn’t quite match up to having the experience in person.

“I got the opportunity as a prize for emerging first in the Hon. Ademorin Kuye ICT competition, held back in September 2023. The trip itself to Abuja took place later. The other lawmakers were very welcoming and accommodating. I spent the day going from meeting to meeting and listening to the motions made by lawmakers for the good of fellow Nigerians as a one-day Federal lawmaker in Nigeria.

“The competition was aimed at uplifting students to learn more about computer studies as the world is at the peak of the technology age and fast evolving daily with the knowledge of computer and technology being the leverage to keep one ahead of time for efficiency and maximum productivity and development.

Master Oluwanifesimi Oyawa with Barr. Ademorin Kuye, House of Representatives member representing Shomolu Federal constituency during the One Day Federal Lawmaker ceremony in Abuja.

“The first time I used a computer was in primary school. The school wanted all students to be computer literate, so we had practical classes where we learned how to use the computer. I got my first laptop just before the COVID-19 pandemic and taught myself how to use all the Microsoft applications, and just last year, I got Excel certified. The competition has opened my eyes to the amazing possibilities and incredible power of technology, especially in the modern world.

“I have been motivated and still studied computer studies a lot afterward and also won the best student in Computer Studies in SS2. As I’m currently writing my final secondary school exam called WAEC, I endeavour to pass excellently well in my efforts to study Computer Science at the university level.

“I remain forever grateful to Hon. Barr. Ademorin Kuye for setting up the competition and looking forward to seeing it return for a second edition later this year. It served as encouragement to me to work hard at my academics not only to succeed but also to educate myself and equip myself with computer and unlock a world of endless possibilities.”
